What is the USAT Liberty wreck?

The USAT Liberty is a 120-metre US Army cargo ship, torpedoed in 1942 and pushed into the sea by a 1963 volcanic eruption. It now lies on a slope 5 to 30 metres deep, a short swim off Tulamben beach, completely covered in coral and marine life. It is one of the most accessible wreck dives in the world.

What will you see on the wreck?

The hull is draped in soft and hard coral and busy with life: schooling jacks and bumphead parrotfish at dawn, garden eels in the sand, turtles, and the occasional reef shark. Because the shallowest sections start at 5 metres, even newly certified divers get the full experience.

Why dive Tulamben at sunrise?

We start early — around 05:30 pickup — to be first in the water. You get glassy conditions, the best light for photos, and the wreck before the day-trip crowds arrive. After the first dive we surface for breakfast by the sea, then dive again.
